Watercolor Illustration on an Earl Grey Tea Bag
Serotonin on Earl Grey is part of a series of illustrations done in moments of artistic escapism where I focused on the art of creation and not on the final outcome. Studies show that 45 minutes of engaging in a creative art process can greatly decrease stress levels. As a person living with ill mental health, analyzing the brain has been a theme in my life since I was a child sitting in my psychiatrist’s chair. For this piece, I was inspired by images of serotonin crystals magnified under a microscope. These colorful crystals are responsible for body functions such as mood, sleep, sexual desire, and more. Depression, a mood disorder I have lived with since I was a child, is essentially the lack of serotonin so I created my own.
